Grimes, N. (2022, October 25). Garvey in the Dark. Astra Publishing House. 176 Pages. Tr $ 14.99. ISBN 1635925266.

Garvey is happy because he loves music with his father, bullies no longer bother him, and his best pals Manny and Joe are with him. When schools, stores, and restaurants close due to illness, Garvey's improved life is also on hold. When Garvey's father gets unwell, he must use his newfound musical skills to give him and himself hope. This powerful, moving, and brilliantly presented tale shows readers how even tiny acts have big repercussions, how everyone can make a difference, and how there is hope and healing even in the worst times.

Ramée, L. M. (2020, January 1). A Good Kind of Trouble. Thorndike Striving Reader. 384 Pages. Tr $7.99. ISBN 0062836692.

Twelve-year-old Shayla is regarded as a goody-too-shoes because she appears to avoid trouble at all costs. She only wants to abide by the regulations. However, junior high seems to have different rules. Her best friends are now making her doubt who they are, and some of her classmates are criticizing her for not being black enough. Black Lives Matter is something that Shay's sister Hana is involved with, but she doesn't think it's right for her. However, Shay comes to the conclusion that breaking certain regulations is worthwhile after going through a powerful protest. To show her support for the Black Lives Matter movement, she begins to wear an armband to school. People will quickly form opinions. An ultimatum is also delivered to her. This was an absolute delight to read and will recommend it for the straightforward reason that it is a coming-of-age tale that conveys the difficult obstacles that young adults will confront as they enter junior high school and gain control over their own perspectives and emotions.
