Miss Moses LoBeau, an upcoming sixth grader in Tupelo Landing, NC, believes no secret is paramount. A hurricane brought her ashore eleven years ago. Mo wants her "upstream mother," but she's found a home with the Colonel, a café owner with a mysterious past, and Miss Lana, the café hostess. Mo will do whatever it takes to protect the ones she loves and this seen throughout the book. When a policeman investigates a murder, Mo and her best friend, Dale Earnhardt Johnson III, investigate to save Mo's family.

After a Japanese fishing vessel sinks, 14-year-old Manjiro is inquisitive and eager to learn about this new culture.A passing American ship rescues its crew after they swim to a small, unknown island. As Japan's borders remain blocked to Western nations, the crew travels to America, learning English.  The captain brings Manjiro to New England as his own. After living there, the boy pans for gold in San Francisco. After several years, he returns to Japan and is imprisoned as an outsider. Manjiro can persuade the emperor to open Japan's borders due to his extensive Western understanding. I enjoyed this story because of how adventurous it is and how it can be applied to real events in history.
