Traditional Literature

Campoy, F. I., & Ada, A. F. (2006, September 1). Tales Our Abuelitas Told. Atheneum. 128 pages. Tr. $16.41, ISBN 978-0689825835.

A young girl with audacity, a magic set of bagpipes, a cunning fox, and a bird of a thousand hues...Anthology of Popular Stories and Literary Lore, this compilation honors Hispanic culture and its diverse heritage, which includes African, Hebrew, Indigenous, and Spanish influences. These stories are particularly for elementary aged children because of the relatability of the story with influences of culture with a touch of humor.

Hamilton, V., Dillon, L., & Dillon, D. (2000, January 1). The People Could Fly. Alfred A. Knopf Books for Young Readers. 192 pages. Tr. $12.99. ISBN 9780679843368.

Within this collection, Virginia Hamiliton skillfully retells 24 Black American traditional tales, ranging from those with an eerie or whimsical tone to cautionary tales or those about slaves' journeys to freedom. You can read everyone with ease. Paintings from Dillion, who created over forty illustrations for the story, are also included in this book. This book is near and dear to my heart because my grandma owned this book and remembers the illustrations and the important yet heartbreaking stories from the different tales.
